Aabybro Mejeri is a family-owned Danish dairy located in Aabybro in northern Jutland, with origins dating back to 1888. It was established by farmers from seven surrounding farms as a cooperative dairy for processing locally sourced milk. The dairy was built beside the Ryå River, whose water was used to cool the milk. Its original production included milk, cheese and butter intended for both the local market and export. The dairy became privately owned in 1948, while the Lindhardt family took over the business in 1968. Anker and Ingeborg Lindhardt renovated the facility and continued production based on traditional dairy-making methods. The business is now managed by the third generation of the family, with Niels Jørgen Lindhardt becoming a co-owner in 2023. An important part of the range is traditionally churned butter, available in a classic salted version and a variety seasoned with sea salt from the island of Læsø. In 1990, the dairy launched the Ryå Is ice cream brand, named after the nearby river. Under this brand, it produces dairy ice creams, sorbets, soft-serve ice cream, ice cream cakes and specially developed energy-dense ice creams. Its products are available from the dairy’s own shop, through its online store and from retailers across Denmark. Aabybro Mejeri combines the history of cooperative dairy production with contemporary family-run butter and ice cream manufacturing.
