Abbazia delle Tre Fontane in Rome operates the only Trappist brewery in Italy, run by monks of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance. Brewing began in 2015 as part of the monastic tradition of manual work and self-sufficiency, in accordance with the strict rules governing Trappist products: the beer must be brewed within the monastery, under the supervision of the monks, and profits must support the monastic community and charitable activities.
