Akha Ama Coffee is a Thai specialty coffee producer and social enterprise founded in 2010 by Lee Ayu Chuepa, a member of the Akha indigenous community in northern Thailand. Established in Chiang Mai, the company was created to improve the livelihoods of local coffee-growing communities through sustainable farming practices and direct trade relationships. Akha Ama works closely with smallholder farmers who cultivate Arabica coffee in high-altitude agroforestry systems, promoting biodiversity and environmental stewardship. The company oversees the entire production process, from sourcing and roasting to brewing and retail, ensuring full traceability and consistent quality. Its portfolio includes single-origin coffees, carefully crafted blends, and seasonal microlots that showcase the distinctive characteristics of Thai coffee-growing regions. Akha Ama is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of Thailand’s specialty coffee movement and has played a significant role in raising the international profile of Thai Arabica coffee. In addition to its cafés and roastery in Chiang Mai, the brand has expanded to Japan, where it operates specialty coffee shops featuring Thai-grown coffee. The company’s business model combines premium coffee production with social impact, fair compensation for farmers, and long-term community development. Today, Akha Ama Coffee is regarded as one of Thailand’s most respected specialty coffee brands and a leading example of sustainable coffee entrepreneurship.
