Birrificio Italiano is an independent Italian craft brewery founded by brewmaster Agostino Arioli in 1994 in Lurago Marinone, Lombardy. Its original facility opened to the public on April 3, 1996 as a brewpub and the first microbrewery of its kind in Lombardy. Production began with a 200-liter brewing system and two beers named Tipopils and Rossoscura. Tipopils gradually became the brewery’s most recognizable product and an important example of the Italian approach to pale lager. Its use of dry hopping influenced the development of the category later known as Italian Pilsner. The initial selection was gradually expanded with beers of different styles, including Bibock, Amber Shock, VùDù, Fleurette, and Scires. The brewery produces unfiltered and unpasteurized beers without additives, focusing on preserving the characteristics of malt, hops, and yeast. It sources malt from selected European suppliers and examines individual batches in its own laboratory. Most of its hops come from the German region of Tettnang and from Slovenia. As the business expanded, production was transferred to a larger facility in Limido Comasco in 2012, while the original location in Lurago Marinone remained a brewpub and the brand’s historic home. The brewery was among the early recipients of the Italian certification for independent craft beer production. Its work has played a significant role in the development of contemporary Italian craft beer culture since the mid-1990s.
