Merga Victa Pošip Sur Lie is a white wine produced by Black Island Winery on the island of Korčula in southern Dalmatia, made from the indigenous Croatian grape variety Pošip. The grapes come from vineyards around the village of Smokvica, an area historically associated with the origin and cultivation of this variety.
After fermentation, the wine is aged on fine lees (“sur lie”), a technique in which the wine remains in contact with the yeast sediments for an extended period. This process enhances texture, adds complexity and contributes to greater aromatic depth.
In the glass the wine shows a bright golden-yellow color with good clarity. The aromatic profile is layered, typically revealing notes of ripe citrus, peach and apricot, along with hints of Mediterranean herbs and subtle mineral nuances.
Aging on lees may also bring delicate notes of brioche or toasted bread that complement the fruit character. On the palate the wine is structured and creamy, yet balanced by refreshing acidity that maintains vibrancy and precision.
The finish is persistent, with a combination of fruit richness and saline minerality reflecting the coastal terroir of Korčula. Merga Victa Pošip Sur Lie represents a more complex and textured expression of Pošip, highlighting the potential of this Dalmatian variety when combined with careful vineyard selection and extended lees aging.
