Orval Trappist Ale is a unique and legendary Trappist beer brewed by Brasserie d'Orval, located within the medieval Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Orval in southern Belgium. Unlike other Trappist breweries that produce a range of styles, Orval offers only one beer for general distribution - but its distinctive character and originality have earned it a cult status among beer enthusiasts worldwide. Orval Trappist Ale belongs to the Belgian Pale Ale style, enhanced by the addition of Brettanomyces wild yeast, placing it within the category of Brett Beers.

It has an alcohol content of around 6.2%, and is known for its copper-orange color, rich and stable head, and remarkably complex aroma profile. On the nose, one can detect notes of yeast, dried fruit, citrus peel, earthy tones, spicy hops, leather, and hay, accompanied by a touch of noble acidity and pronounced dryness. One of the signature features of Orval is its use of dry hopping, along with the addition of Brettanomyces yeast at bottling, which allows the beer to mature and evolve over time.

Young Orval is fruitier, fresher, and livelier, while aged Orval develops more earthy, funky notes and deeper complexity. Each bottle is marked with a bottling date, as the beer continues to change and mature with age.
