Brauerei Schloss Eggenberg Stöhr is an Austrian family-owned brewery located at Eggenberg Castle near Vorchdorf in the federal state of Upper Austria. Evidence of beer production at the estate dates back to the 14th century when beer was made for the castle and surrounding settlements. Organized commercial production began in 1681 under the management of Michael Weismann. Johann Georg Forstinger, an ancestor of the present Stöhr owner family, purchased the brewery in 1803, while the family acquired the castle several years later. The company has since developed as an independent family brewery that is now managed by the eighth generation of the owners’ descendants. A fire in 1877 destroyed a substantial part of the historic complex, after which the castle and production facilities were rebuilt. Modernization continued throughout the 20th century while preserving traditional bottom-fermentation methods and the extended maturation of selected beers. The brewery uses water from its own spring, malt made from selected grains, and different hop varieties suited to each product. Its portfolio includes pale and dark lagers, pilsners, wheat beers, radlers, and several varieties of strong bock beer. Its specialization in strong beers with extended maturation distinguishes it from large industrial producers. Its products are available throughout Austria and exported to several dozen countries through Eggenberger International, a company established in 1992. Schloss Eggenberg today combines a historic brewing estate, long-standing family ownership, and the modern production of Austrian specialty beers.
