The first batch was brewed on February 24, 1999, to commemorate the birthday of Emperor Charles V, who was raised in Mechelen. The beer was originally named Gouden Carolus Cuvée van de Keizer Imperial Dark, with the name referring to the emperor’s special cuvée. The brewery traditionally produces it once a year on February 24 as a limited vintage release. It contains 11 percent alcohol by volume and has a full body with pronounced aromatic complexity. It is made through top fermentation using carefully selected dark and roasted malts. The beer has a deep ruby-red to dark-brown color and a dense creamy head. Roasted malt, caramel, plums, and other dark dried fruits dominate its aroma. Its flavor is sweet and rounded with notes of toffee, chocolate, raisins, and subtle spices. The fruity character softens the intensity of the roasted malt and contributes to the beer’s balance. Its high alcohol content provides noticeable warmth without overwhelming the malt and fruit aromas. The beer can develop additional complexity during extended bottle maturation, meaning that individual vintages may differ in their aromatic profiles.
