Carlsbourg is a Belgian butter and cream brand whose origins date back to 1895. Its history is connected to the agricultural school of Collège Saint-Joseph in the village of Carlsbourg in the Belgian Ardennes. The school’s director, Brother Mathias-Marie, acquired a mechanical cream separator so that students in the agricultural department could produce butter. The equipment was also made available to local farmers, leading to the establishment of a local dairy cooperative. Approximately 300 farmers participated in its early operations by delivering milk for processing. The dairy became a regional cooperative in 1896 and moved into a larger facility at the beginning of the twentieth century. Due to increased production, the plant was relocated from Carlsbourg to Recogne in 1974, where more modern facilities were established. Today, Carlsbourg butter is produced by Solarec within the Laiterie des Ardennes cooperative, while Corman is responsible for its marketing and distribution. The brand’s principal products belong to the Beurre d’Ardenne variety, which has held European Protected Designation of Origin status since 1996. This designation requires the cream to originate within the defined Belgian Ardennes area and the butter to be produced in the same region. The range includes salted and unsalted PDO butter, churned butter, spreadable varieties, individual portions, and several types of cream.
