L’Élixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse is a concentrated herbal elixir produced by Carthusian monks according to a recipe more than two and a half centuries old, based on a manuscript from 1605 containing the formula for an “elixir of long life”. It was first made in 1764 at the Grande-Chartreuse Monastery in the French Alps and continues to be produced today exclusively in limited quantities.
It contains extracts from 130 carefully selected herbs, flowers, roots, barks, and spices, prepared through a strictly controlled and secretive process known only to a few monks. With an alcohol content of 69%, Élixir Végétal is extremely potent and is not intended for casual drinking; instead, it is consumed in small doses as a digestif, tonic, or aromatic additive.
Its flavor is intense, layered, and distinctly herbal, combining fresh, spicy, citrus, and slightly bitter notes that linger long after the sip. Its popularity stems not only from its aromatic richness but also from the perception that it possesses beneficial properties, which is part of its historical reputation.
Its uniqueness and mystique have made it an inseparable part of the Chartreuse brand’s identity, as well as a product revered by liqueur enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.
