Chimay Grande Réserve was originally developed in 1956 as a Christmas edition, but due to its exceptional popularity, it became a permanent part of the Chimay brewery’s lineup, located within the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Scourmont in Belgium. Grande Réserve belongs to the Belgian Strong Dark Ale style and has an alcohol content of 9%.
Its deep dark brown color and rich, foamy head introduce a complex aromatic profile that unfolds gradually, revealing notes of dried fruits, caramel, toasted sugar, dark chocolate, spices, and delicate yeast esters. The taste is full and layered, with subtle alcoholic warmth, a smooth body, and a long, rounded finish. What sets Chimay Grande Réserve apart is its remarkable potential for long-term aging and bottle maturation - the beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized, allowing fermentation to continue after bottling.
Over time, it develops even more refined and mellow flavors, reminiscent of well-aged wines. It pairs beautifully with mature Trappist cheeses, dark chocolate, game-based dishes, or can be enjoyed as a digestif.
