La Faraona is the most prestigious wine of Descendientes de J. Palacios and one of the most celebrated red wines produced in the Bierzo region today.
It is made from Mencía grown on a tiny, steep vineyard above the village of Corullón, planted on slate soils and uniquely oriented to the north - an uncommon exposure in this area. This setting allows for slower ripening, preserving freshness while delivering remarkable aromatic precision and fine structure.
The vines are very old and yields are extremely low, which means La Faraona is produced in very limited quantities. The vineyard is farmed according to biodynamic principles, with hand harvesting and a strong focus on soil and vine health.
In the cellar, a minimalist approach is followed, with spontaneous fermentation and aging in large, neutral wooden vessels to maintain the purity of the terroir. Aromatically, the wine is deep and layered, showing dark cherry, forest berries, dried herbs, spice, and a pronounced mineral backbone.
On the palate, it is powerful yet exceptionally precise and elegant, with fine, taut tannins and a long, persistent finish. Despite its concentration, La Faraona never feels heavy, always retaining a sense of lightness and energy.
The style emphasizes structure and complexity over simple fruit expression. It has outstanding aging potential and evolves beautifully over decades.
Today, La Faraona is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of how Mencía can reach the level of the world’s great red wines.
