Liqueur de Châtaigne is a chestnut liqueur made by Distillerie La Salamandre in the French region of Périgord, where chestnuts are part of the local culinary tradition.
It is made from a chestnut infusion with sugar syrup and a touch of caramel. It also contains alcohol and natural flavouring, and has an alcohol content of 18% ABV. The caramel adds a subtle note of toasted sugar to the chestnut flavour.
The liqueur has a rounded taste with notes of candied chestnut, wood and caramel. It can be served chilled or over ice, added to white wine to make a kir, used in cocktails, or poured into a still-warm coffee cup. It can also be used to flavour custards, cakes and ice cream.
