Saffredi from Fattoria Le Pupille is the estate’s flagship wine and one of the most iconic red wines of the Maremma. First released in the mid-1980s, Saffredi is a Bordeaux-inspired blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a smaller proportion of Petit Verdot, sourced from the estate’s best vineyard sites.
The vineyards benefit from maritime influence from the Tyrrhenian Sea and complex soils rich in clay and limestone, which contribute both ripeness and freshness. Vinification is meticulous, followed by aging in French oak barrels that enhances complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Aromatically, Saffredi shows layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, supported by notes of Mediterranean herbs, graphite, spice, and subtle balsamic nuances. On the palate, it is structured and deep, with refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, persistent finish.
Despite its power, the wine maintains balance and precision, favoring elegance over heaviness. Saffredi is built for long aging and stands as a benchmark Super Tuscan from coastal Tuscany, clearly expressing the ambition and potential of Maremma.
