Es Primitivo di Manduria is the flagship wine of Gianfranco Fino and one of the most iconic expressions of Primitivo from southern Italy. It is produced exclusively from very old Primitivo vines in the Manduria area, many trained in the traditional alberello system, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor.
The warm Salento climate is balanced by careful vineyard work and low-intervention winemaking, allowing the variety’s power to remain precise and controlled. In the glass, the wine shows a deep, dense ruby color and an intense aromatic profile marked by ripe black cherry, plum, blackberry, and fig, layered with notes of Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, cocoa, and subtle balsamic nuances.
On the palate, Es is full-bodied and richly textured, with ripe, polished tannins and a vibrant acidity that brings balance and length. Despite its intensity, the wine avoids heaviness, favoring clarity and harmony over excess.
Aging in French oak is carefully calibrated to support structure without masking varietal character. Built for aging, Es Primitivo di Manduria develops additional complexity over time, gaining savory and tertiary notes.
It stands as a benchmark for Primitivo, illustrating how old vines, restraint, and terroir-driven precision can elevate a traditionally powerful southern Italian wine into a refined and age-worthy expression.
