Great Leap Brewing is a Chinese craft brewery founded in Beijing by Carl Setzer and Liu Fang in 2010. It is regarded as the first modern craft brewery in the Chinese capital. The business began in a restored traditional courtyard house in the Dongcheng district. Initial production was small and primarily intended for customers visiting the brewery’s own venue. Great Leap Brewing distinguished itself by combining contemporary brewing styles with ingredients characteristic of Chinese cuisine. Some of its beers incorporate Sichuan peppercorns, Chinese honey, cinnamon and Tieguanyin oolong tea. Its best-known products include Honey Ma Gold, Pale Ale No. 6, Little General IPA and Iron Buddha Blonde. Honey Ma Gold combines honey from Shandong Province with aromatic Sichuan peppercorns and has become one of the brand’s most recognizable beers. Product names and visual identity frequently draw on Chinese history, culture and places associated with the brewery’s development. The range includes pale ales, wheat beers, dark beers, porters and various heavily hopped styles. In addition to its regular products, the brewery develops seasonal and experimental releases. Great Leap Brewing has played an important role in the development of Beijing’s modern craft beer culture and in introducing this category to domestic consumers.
