Hafız Mustafa 1864 is a traditional Turkish confectionery founded in 1864 in the Bahçekapı district of Istanbul. The business was established by Hacı İsmail Hakkı Bey during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz. Production began in the basement of his shop where sugar candies were made using a stone mortar. The business was later taken over by his son Hafız Mustafa after whom the confectionery received its present name. Over time production expanded to include Turkish delight, baklava, kadaif, candies, rice pudding, muhallebi and other sweets associated with Ottoman and Turkish confectionery traditions. The business was subsequently continued by Hafız Mustafa’s son Cemil Bey who marketed some products under the name Çikolat Cemil. Today the company operates a chain of confectionery shops with several locations in Istanbul and branches outside Turkey. Although its current production is considerably larger than that of the original family workshop Hafız Mustafa 1864 remains one of Istanbul’s oldest active confectionery brands.
