Steirisches Kürbiskernöl g.g.A. is an Austrian pumpkin seed oil produced by Hamlitsch in Deutschlandsberg, western Styria. It carries Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, with authenticity and verified origin confirmed by a label bearing a unique control number.
It is made by traditionally pressing roasted pumpkin seeds, with pumpkin seed oil listed as the sole ingredient. Roasting develops its distinctive aromatic character, while production draws on craftsmanship passed down through generations of the Hamlitsch family.
It is characterized by a dark green colour, a nutty aroma, and a flavour reminiscent of toasted dark bread crust. It is used in salads, as an accompaniment to egg dishes, or paired with vanilla ice cream, where its roasted notes complement the dessert’s creamy sweetness.

Hamlitsch, also known as Weststeirische Ölmühle, is an Austrian family-run oil mill based in Deutschlandsberg, western Styria, specializing in pumpkin seed oil and other oilseed products. Founded in 1928, the mill is now run by Ulrike and Guntram Hamlitsch, carrying the family’s expertise into its third generation.
The family’s involvement in the business began in 1948, when Josef Hamlitsch joined as an accountant, followed by the purchase of the mill in 1972. Guntram junior joined the business in 1988 and took over its management in 2000.
At the heart of the range is Steirisches Kürbiskernöl g.g.A., Styrian pumpkin seed oil with Protected Geographical Indication status, made from roasted seeds using traditional pressing methods. The range also includes organic pumpkin seed, linseed, and hemp seed oils, pumpkin seed pesto, snacking seeds, and protein flours.
Today, Hamlitsch supplies individual customers, retailers, and the hospitality sector through direct and online sales. The business has expanded beyond Austria into Germany and other European markets. Its long-term vision is to make Styrian pumpkin seed oil a recognizable ingredient in kitchens around the world.
