Hofbräu Dunkel is a traditional Munich dark lager and one of the brewery’s oldest styles, representing an authentic example of the classic Dunkel beer. It pours a deep mahogany-brown color with subtle reddish highlights and a stable beige head.
The aroma reveals dominant notes of toasted malt, cocoa powder, bread crust, and light caramel, with very delicate hints of dried fruit. The flavor is rounded and gently sweet, yet never heavy: caramel and bready tones come through clearly, complemented by mild chocolate accents and a soft bitterness that stays in the background without any harshness.
The body is medium, smooth, and supported by moderate carbonation, which enhances drinkability despite the darker profile. With an alcohol content of around 5.5%, it balances warmth and ease of drinking.
Hofbräu Dunkel highlights the tradition of Munich malt and the technique of slow, careful lagering. It pairs excellently with roasted meats, classic Bavarian dishes, sausages, warm pretzels, and onion-based foods.
