Kogane-imo is a baked Japanese confection made by Kotobukidō in Tokyo’s Ningyōchō district. Its name means “golden potato,” and its appearance resembles a small roasted sweet potato.
Beneath its thin crust lies a golden-yellow filling of white beans and egg yolks, known as kimi-an. The filling is wrapped in dough made from eggs, wheat flour, and sugar, dusted with nikki, a type of cinnamon, and baked at a high temperature. This spice gives it the aroma that makes Kotobukidō recognizable even to passersby.
Kogane-imo has a soft, slightly moist filling, moderate sweetness, and a pronounced cinnamon aroma. It pairs well with sencha or roasted hōjicha tea and can also be served with coffee or black tea.
