Kenya Kirinyaga Washed by Kronotrop is a single-origin specialty coffee from Kenya’s Kirinyaga region. The beans come from family-owned farms organized around the Kimandi processing station, which is managed by the Kabare Farmers’ Cooperative Society. The coffee is grown on the fertile slopes of Mount Kenya at elevations between 1,900 and 2,000 meters. Deep red volcanic soil and annual rainfall ranging from 1,000 to 1,400 millimeters provide favorable conditions for the cherries to ripen slowly. This AB-grade lot consists of 80 percent SL28 and SL34 Arabica varieties, while the remaining 20 percent comprises Ruiru 11 and Batian. Ripe cherries are hand-picked and sorted before the pulp is removed. The beans are then fermented for approximately 16 hours, washed with clean water and graded according to quality. Drying takes place on raised beds in the sun and lasts between 14 and 21 days. The washed process contributes to a clean flavor, pronounced acidity and clearly defined aromatic characteristics. Kronotrop identifies notes of blood orange, sour cherry, marmalade, toffee and black tea.
