Kulmbacher Brauerei is a German brewery based in Kulmbach in northern Bavaria. Its origins date to 1846 when Johann Wolfgang Reichel, Johann Konrad Scheiding, and Johann Martin Hübner established a brewing association from which Reichelbräu later developed. The company expanded over the following decades by incorporating several breweries and their established regional brands. Mönchshof became part of the company in 1984, while EKU joined in 1996. In the same year, the company adopted its present name, Kulmbacher Brauerei Aktien-Gesellschaft, and brought Kulmbach’s traditional beer brands under common management. Its principal brands include Kulmbacher, Mönchshof, Kapuziner, and EKU. The portfolio comprises pilsners, pale and dark lagers, wheat beers, cellar beers, bock beers, festival brews, and alcohol-free varieties. The flagship product of the Kulmbacher brand is Kulmbacher Edelherb, a German-style pilsner first brewed in 1932. Production follows the German brewing tradition and uses water, barley or wheat malt, hops, and yeast, with many raw materials sourced from the surrounding region. Kulmbacher Brauerei serves as the parent company of a wider beverage group involved in beer production, mineral water, soft drinks, distribution, and retail. Its principal markets are northern Bavaria, Saxony, Thuringia, and Hesse, although selected brands are distributed throughout Germany and exported internationally. Paulaner Brauerei Gruppe is the company’s majority shareholder, while Kulmbacher Brauerei shares are traded on the Bavarian Stock Exchange. The brewery remains closely connected with the identity of Kulmbach and participates in organizing Kulmbacher Bierwoche, an annual festival dedicated to the city’s brewing culture.
