Land O’Lakes is an American agricultural cooperative established in Minnesota in 1921. It was formed by representatives of 320 local dairy cooperatives seeking to improve the quality, grading and marketing of butter. The organisation originally operated as the Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association. The Land O’Lakes name was introduced in 1924 for its standardised sweet cream butter and became the name of the cooperative two years later. The company remains owned by farmers and other members of the American agricultural sector. Its dairy range includes salted and unsalted butter, spreadable butter, flavoured varieties, cheese, cream and products intended for professional food service. Its butter is manufactured on a large scale according to standardised specifications for milk-fat content, flavour and texture.
