Cuishe Joven Artesanal is an artisanal mezcal from Mezcal Carreño in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is made from wild Cuishe agave, which grows in the state’s Central Valleys. As a joven mezcal, it is not aged in wooden barrels, so its character comes primarily from the agave and the production methods used.
The agave hearts are roasted in an underground stone-lined oven, then crushed using a traditional tahona stone wheel. The resulting juices and fibers ferment in wooden vats with wild yeasts before distillation in copper stills. The mezcal is bottled at 46% ABV.
Its aroma combines green agave leaves and damp earth, with a subtle hint of ash. These herbal and earthy notes carry through to the palate, which is bold and full-bodied, with a rounded, almost oily texture and a long finish. It is best enjoyed neat, in small sips, allowing the nuances of its profile to unfold gradually.
