Nakano BC is a Japanese producer of alcoholic beverages and ume-based products headquartered in Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, one of Japan's most renowned regions for plum cultivation. The company was established in 1961, continuing a family business that originally focused on soy sauce production before evolving into one of the country's leading producers of sake, umeshu, shochu, mirin, and other traditional Japanese beverages. It is particularly well known for using locally grown Kishu Nanko ume plums, which are regarded as Japan's finest variety and form the foundation of many of its premium umeshu products. In addition to alcoholic beverages, Nakano BC develops products based on ume extracts, including food ingredients, dietary supplements, essential oils, and cosmetics. In 2002, the company adopted the name Nakano BC, with "BC" standing for Biochemical Creation, reflecting its expansion into biotechnology and health-related products. The company also operates its own research and development center, where it creates innovative products using locally sourced ingredients from Wakayama Prefecture. Today, Nakano BC successfully combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern research and innovation while maintaining a strong commitment to regional ingredients and its long-standing artisanal heritage.
