Oloiya Bakkwa is a traditional Malaysian dried and grilled meat of Chinese origin, produced by the Kuala Lumpur–based brand Oloiya since 1970. Its best-known version is made from pork, although the range also includes chicken bakkwa and varieties prepared from minced or thinly sliced meat.
The meat is marinated according to the brand’s own recipe, shaped into thin pieces, and carefully grilled to develop its characteristic caramelized surface and lightly smoky aroma. Sliced Pork Bakkwa is made from thin pieces of lean pork that are expertly cut, seasoned, and grilled, while the classic version has a more uniform and compact texture.
The product has a tender, slightly chewy texture, a distinctive sweet and savory flavor, and pleasant smoky notes. It can be eaten at room temperature or briefly reheated, cut into smaller pieces as a snack, or served with rice and other dishes. In Malaysia, bakkwa is traditionally purchased and given as a gift during Lunar New Year celebrations, although it is enjoyed throughout the year.
