Pazo de Barrantes is a historic Galician estate and winery located in Barrantes in the municipality of Ribadumia in the Salnés Valley. The estate dates back to the early 16th century and has been associated with the Cebrián-Sagarriga family since 1511. It is currently owned by the same family that manages the Marqués de Murrieta winery in the Rioja wine region. During the 1990s the estate was dedicated to growing Albariño and producing wine within the Rías Baixas designation of origin. The first vintage of Pazo Barrantes was released in 1991. The historic manor house is surrounded by 12 hectares of estate-owned vineyards divided into eight separate plots. The vines have an average age of approximately 40 years while the soil consists mainly of a granite base covered by sandy surface layers. The vineyards lie only a few kilometers from the Atlantic coast where high humidity, abundant rainfall and mild temperatures influence grape development. The vines are traditionally trained on high pergolas to improve air circulation around the grapes and reduce the effects of moisture. Production is based exclusively on Albariño grown in the vineyards surrounding the estate. The winery’s contemporary approach includes extended aging in stainless steel tanks, wooden barrels or concrete vessels followed by additional maturation in the bottle before release.
