Pure One is a family-owned New Zealand mineral water producer founded by Mike Fahy in the Taranaki region in 2002. The brand’s origins are connected to an artesian source accidentally discovered in 1906 when the Bonithon Petroleum Company was drilling for oil in the area. Water from the source was later used at the Tarawhata Mineral Baths, which opened in 1914 and operated until the mid-1960s. The source was reactivated in 1993 after the property changed ownership, while the restored thermal spa opened in 2000. Subsequent analyses confirmed that the water was suitable for drinking, leading to the establishment of the Pure One brand. The water comes from the Matemateāonga Formation and is drawn from a protected artesian aquifer beneath Mount Taranaki. Rainwater naturally filters through layers of volcanic rock over an extended period, gradually absorbing minerals. Carbon dating has determined that the water is at least 46,000 years old at the time of bottling. It rises to the surface through a sealed well approximately 1,000 meters deep under natural artesian pressure. Pure One produces still mineral water with medium mineralization and a mineral profile dominated by sodium and bicarbonate. The company bottles its water in glass and reusable containers and has also developed a refill system available both in-store and through the return of empty containers. Pure One received a Gold Award for taste in the still water category with medium minerality for three consecutive years from 2024 to 2026.
