Primus Branco is a white wine produced by Quinta da Pellada in Portugal’s Dão wine region, made from grapes sourced from an old vineyard planted as a traditional field blend of several indigenous varieties. The dominant grape is Encruzado, accompanied by smaller proportions of local varieties such as Bical, Cercial, and Malvasia, which contribute to the wine’s complexity and balance.
The vineyards are located on granite soils at higher altitudes, a characteristic feature of the Dão region that gives the wine its pronounced mineral character and freshness. Aromatically, the wine shows notes of citrus, ripe pear, white flowers, and subtle herbal nuances.
On the palate it is precise and well-structured, with lively acidity, elegant texture, and a clean mineral finish. Fermentation often takes place partly in oak barrels, and the wine typically spends time on fine lees to develop additional depth and texture.
The result is a wine that combines freshness with structure and aging potential. Primus Branco is often regarded as a representative example of Dão white wines, expressing both the region’s granite terroir and the character of its native grape varieties.
