Scarecrow is a cult winery based in Napa Valley, located within the renowned Rutherford AVA, an appellation celebrated for structured and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate vineyards form part of the historic J.J.

Cohn Estate, where Cabernet Sauvignon vines were first planted in 1945, with some of those old vines still contributing to today’s blends. For decades, fruit from this property was sold to prominent Napa producers before the Scarecrow label was officially launched in the early 2000s.

From its inception, the wines have been crafted by winemaker Celia Welch, known for her precise approach and emphasis on balance, texture, and longevity. Production remains extremely limited, typically only a few hundred cases per vintage, reinforcing its status among California’s most sought-after cult wines.

Distribution is primarily handled through a private mailing list rather than traditional retail channels. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon shows concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum, layered with cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice notes.

The palate is dense yet refined, with finely structured tannins that support extended aging potential. Despite its power, the finish remains focused and composed, avoiding excessive extraction or dominant oak influence.

The Rutherford terroir contributes a recognizable mineral backbone and the dry, dusty tannin profile characteristic of the appellation. Scarecrow operates as a private estate rather than a public tasting destination, maintaining strict control over viticulture and production.

The combination of historic vineyard heritage, limited output, and consistent stylistic identity has positioned Scarecrow as a benchmark for elite Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
