Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest and most respected estates in the Pomerol appellation, with origins dating back to the mid-18th century when it was founded by Jean Demay de Certan. Located on the highest part of the Pomerol plateau, near renowned neighbors such as Château Pétrus and Château Lafleur, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir of clay and gravel soils.

Since 1924, it has been owned by the Thienpont family, who have played a key role in elevating its reputation internationally. The vineyard spans around 14 hectares and is planted mainly with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds structure and complexity uncommon for Pomerol.

The wines are known for their depth, elegance, and remarkable aging potential, combining dark fruit with floral, spicy, and mineral nuances. A minimal-intervention approach in the cellar allows the character of the terroir to remain clearly expressed.

Although Pomerol has no official classification, Vieux Château Certan is widely regarded as one of the leading estates in the appellation. Today, under the direction of Alexandre Thienpont, it continues to produce refined and age-worthy wines that serve as benchmarks for the region.
