Western Star is an Australian butter and dairy spread brand established in 1926 in the western part of the state of Victoria. It was created when leading butter makers from this region, known for its well-developed dairy industry, joined forces. Production is associated with the town of Cobden, which is home to one of Australia’s largest dairy-processing facilities. At this facility, locally sourced milk is processed into butter, cream, dairy beverages and milk powder. Western Star products are made from Australian milk, while the range includes salted and unsalted butter, spreadable varieties and formats intended for professional food service. The brand serves the mass market and is widely available through major retail chains across Australia. Production takes place on a large scale and follows standardised processes designed to maintain consistent product quality. Since March 2026, Western Star has operated as part of Lactalis-Mainland Dairy. Despite the change in ownership, Western Star butter continues to be produced in Australia from Australian milk.
