Vintage Port from Alves de Sousa is a fortified wine produced in exceptional harvest years from grapes grown in the steep vineyards of the Douro Valley, particularly from the estate Quinta da Gaivosa. It is typically made from traditional Douro grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão, which provide structure, depth, and aromatic complexity.
After fermentation is stopped by the addition of grape spirit, the wine ages for a relatively short period in large wooden vats before being bottled, where it continues to mature for many years. Aromatically, Vintage Port usually shows intense notes of blackberries, black cherries, and plum, often accompanied by hints of violets, cocoa, spice, and dark chocolate.
On the palate it is powerful and concentrated, with firm tannins, rich sweetness, and remarkable depth. The wine develops greater complexity over time, revealing layers of dried fruit, tobacco, and spice as it ages in bottle.
Vintage Port from Quinta da Gaivosa is considered a structured and age-worthy expression of Douro Port, capable of evolving for decades.
