Herdade do Mouchão

4.7 ·

Herdade do Mouchão is a historic family-owned winery located in Portugal’s Alentejo region, near the village of Casa Branca, and has been associated with the Reynolds family for more than a century. The estate was developed in the late 19th century when the first vineyards were planted and a traditional winery building was constructed, which still serves as the center of production today.

Mouchão is particularly known for preserving traditional winemaking methods, including fermentation in large stone lagares with grapes crushed by foot. The vineyards are situated on the warm plains of Alentejo, where the climate and soils allow grapes to ripen with notable concentration and structure.

A key element of the estate’s identity is the Alicante Bouschet grape, which was planted here early on and became one of the signature varieties of both the winery and the region. In addition to vineyards, the property includes extensive cork oak forests that are characteristic of the Alentejo landscape.

The winery produces wines known for their deep color, firm structure and long aging potential. Its most iconic label is Mouchão, while the portfolio also includes wines such as Dom Rafael and Ponte.

The combination of long-standing family tradition, historic production methods and the distinctive Alentejo terroir has made Herdade do Mouchão one of the most respected producers in the region.

About this Ranking

TasteAtlas food rankings are based on the ratings of the TasteAtlas audience, with a series of mechanisms that recognize real users and that ignore bot, nationalist or local patriotic ratings, and give additional value to the ratings of users that the system recognizes as knowledgeable.

TasteAtlas Rankings should not be seen as the final global conclusion about food. Their purpose is to promote excellent local foods, instill pride in traditional dishes, and arouse curiosity about dishes you haven’t tried.

The initial list of top producers was compiled based on available reviews, awards, local recommendations, media and blog coverage, and consumer reviews. The list will be updated with ratings from TasteAtlas local ambassadors and TasteAtlas users.
