Samichlaus Classic by Brauerei Schloss Eggenberg Stöhr is a strong dark lager produced in the doppelbock style. The name Samichlaus comes from Swiss German and refers to Saint Nicholas. The original beer was developed by the Hürlimann brewery in Zurich and introduced in 1980. Production in Switzerland ended following the brewery’s closure during the 1990s. Schloss Eggenberg acquired the brand rights and original recipe before reviving production in 2000 in cooperation with former Hürlimann specialists. The beer is brewed only once each year on December 6, Saint Nicholas Day. Following fermentation, it matures for approximately ten months before bottling. It contains 14 percent alcohol by volume and ranks among the strongest regularly produced lager beers. Samichlaus Classic has a dark reddish-brown color, a dense body, and a pronounced malt character. Its aromatic profile includes notes of caramel, vanilla, figs, raisins, chocolate, and toasted malt. Extended maturation contributes to its complexity and softens the sharpness associated with its high alcohol content. The beer has relatively low carbonation and pronounced sweetness derived from the large quantity of malt used in its production. Its high alcohol content and concentrated malt structure allow it to continue developing during extended bottle maturation.
