Imperium Prunum is an imperial Baltic porter produced by the Polish brewery Browar Kormoran. First released in 2016 it was developed as a stronger and denser interpretation of the brewery’s traditional Porter Warmiński. The beer has an original extract of 26 degrees Plato and contains approximately 11 percent alcohol. Its defining ingredient is Suska Sechlońska which is a traditionally smoked plum produced around the village of Sechna in southern Poland. This regional product is made from European plums and is protected by the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication. The smoky character of Imperium Prunum therefore comes from the fruit rather than from smoked malt. The beer has an opaque black colour with occasional dark ruby reflections and a compact beige head. Roasted malts contribute notes associated with coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate and caramel. The smoked plums introduce additional fruit, smoke and mild acidity which balance the dense malt base. Its body is full and concentrated while extended maturation helps integrate the roasted, fruity and alcoholic elements. Imperium Prunum is produced in limited annual editions and can continue to develop during bottle ageing.
