Carnegie Porter by Carlsberg Sverige is a dark Swedish beer produced in the Baltic porter style. The product’s history began at Lorentska Brewery in Gothenburg where porter production was launched in 1817. David Carnegie Jr. took over the brewery in 1836, after which the beer became known as Carnegie Porter. The brand has remained on the market ever since and is identified by the company as Sweden’s oldest active trademark. Porter originated in England during the 18th century but developed a stronger and more rounded regional character in the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. Carnegie Porter belongs to this Baltic variation and represents one of the most historically significant examples of the style in Sweden. The current version is produced at the Carlsberg Sverige brewery in Falkenberg and contains 5.5 percent alcohol by volume. It has a very dark brown to almost black color and a persistent creamy head. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and brown sugar dominate its aromatic profile. The flavor is full and rounded with notes of caramel, cocoa, and lightly toasted grains. Its malty sweetness is balanced by moderate hop bitterness that remains noticeable in the finish.
