Baga Quinta do Ribeirinho Pé Franco is one of the most important and highly regarded wines produced by Luis Pato, the pioneer of modern winemaking in Portugal’s Bairrada region. The wine is made exclusively from the Baga grape, but what makes it exceptional is that the vines are ungrafted - pé franco (on their original roots, without American rootstock), something extremely rare in Europe after phylloxera.

This cultivation method allows for a more direct expression of the terroir and a pure, authentic character of Baga. The Quinta do Ribeirinho vineyard lies on clay-limestone soils, which give the wine structure, firm tannins, and long aging potential.

The harvest is done manually with careful selection of clusters, and fermentation takes place in open stainless-steel tanks to control extraction and preserve fine, ripe tannins. After fermentation, the wine ages in French barrique barrels, contributing to complexity and elegance without overpowering the primary aromas.

In the glass, Pé Franco Baga typically shows a deep ruby color with subtle garnet reflections. On the nose, it reveals black cherry, dried cranberry, spices, and leather, along with minerality and earthy tones reflecting the Bairrada terroir.

On the palate, it is firm, vibrant in acidity, and structured with pronounced yet refined tannins, finishing long and persistent, indicating significant aging potential. Its character is often compared to Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo due to its elegance, depth, and ability to evolve beautifully over time.
