Best Occitan Wine Types

01

Cahors

4 ·

Cahors is a French wine region where the principal grape is Malbec, with small percentages of Tannat and Merlot. Although Malbec is nowadays primarily associated with Argentinian Mendoza region, the grape originated in France, but in the 1950s, it was almost entirely wiped out by frost. Cahors now remains as the only French region that produces Malbec-based wines. Often dubbed as black due to their dark purple color, young wines from Cahors are powerful and rich in tannins, and they typically display aromas of dark fruit and spices. They have excellent aging potential, resulting in styles that usually have softer tannins and aromas of truffle and undergrowth. Cahors wines are a perfect match to red meat, rich stews, or duck.

02

Madiran

3.7 ·

Madiran is a French appellation known for the production of dense red wines that are primarily based on the local Tannat grape with the usual addition of Cabernet Franc (Bouchy), Cabernet Sauvignon, and Fer (Pinenc). Madiran wines are typically dark-ruby, earthy, fruit-forward, and rustic with firm tannins that are mainly present in their youth. These age-worthy wines are characterized by the aromas of red fruit, primarily raspberry, while aromas of spices and black fruit usually develop with age. Madiran wines are praised as a perfect accompaniment to rich Gascon cuisine which includes specialties such as duck confit, foie gras, or cassoulet. The appellation expands over three departments: Gers, Hautes-Pyrénées, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

03

Picpoul de Pinet

3.5 ·

Picpoul de Pinet is Languedoc's amazingly crisp and dry wine made from the ancient local grape variety called Piquepoul—often translated as lip-stinger—which has been grown near the Thau lagoon for centuries, and which is noted for its acidity and lots of bright, fresh flavors. Wines made with 100% Piquepoul are crystal clear with green highlights, bright and buoyant, invigorating and refreshing with enough texture, fruit, floral fragrance, and a nice clean finish. Picpouls are best enjoyed young and well-chilled. They're a perfect match to any fish and seafood, especially shellfish and other crustaceans, but also some traditional Mediterranean dishes, rich cheeses, and charcuterie.

04

Tannat

3.3 ·

Tannat is a French red-skinned grape primarily associated with south-western France and the Madiran appellation, though it is suggested that it could have Basque origin. This grape typically produces big, bold, and richly-colored tannic red wines with good acidity and excellent aging potential. Because of those rich tannins—which is why it probably got its name—Tannat is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Fer to soften its natural astringency. The wines are usually harsh in their youth, but modern techniques are often oriented towards supple expressions that can be enjoyed young, though all benefit from age. French Tannat typically has a fruity flavor and aroma, usually reminiscent of red and dark berries, licorice, and tobacco. Apart from Madiran, Tannat is also used in the appellations Saint-Mont, Irouléguy, Béarn, Tursan, Côtes du Brulhois, and Cahors. Tannat is found in several other wine regions, but Uruguay is its undisputable second home. French Tannat would pair well with red meat and game.

05

Côtes du Roussillon Villages

2.9 ·

Côtes du Roussillon Villages is a French appellation located in the Roussillon wine region that includes the villages Caramany, Latour de France, Lesquerde, and Tautave, all surrounding the village of Maury. The appellation exclusively produces red blends that are based on Grenache, Carignan Noir, Lladoner Pelut, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Due to different soils and blends, the wines can slightly differ in character, but they are generally powerful and tannic with fruity notes that are complemented by herbal, spicy, mineral, and earthy nuances. The wines perfectly pair with game, white or red meat, and cheese.

06

Négrette

n/a ·

Négrette is an old French red grape cultivated around Fronton in the namesake appellation located north of Toulouse. Although there are several theories, the grape's origin has not yet been thoroughly identified. Négrette is a deeply colored grape that produces aromatic and supple wines with medium acidity and low tannins. The wines are mostly fruity in aroma and flavor, and they sometimes have violet and animal-like notes with a hint of spice. The wines are excellent in their youth, but they also have some potential to age.

07

Noilly Prat

n/a ·

Noilly Prat (Original Dry) is a variety of dry vermouth hailing from the south of France. It is made from dry white wines that are fortified and infused with various herbs and botanicals such as orange zest, chamomile, gentian root, and nutmeg. Noilly is pale golden and light with a subtly bitter finish that is accompanied by herbal and floral aromas. Although it is often enjoyed as an aperitif, preferably served over ice, this vermouth is also used in cooking, mostly in sauces and deglazing. It is also an important ingredient in some of the most popular classic cocktails such as Martini and Perfect Manhattan. Apart from the original Noilly, the brand also produces Red and Amber vermouth.

08

Maury

n/a ·

Maury is a French appellation located in Roussillon that produces vin doux naturel—fortified wine styles with a high quantity of natural sugars. The principal grape is Grenache (Noir, Blanc, and Gris), though small amounts of other grapes can be used as well. Most Maury wines are red and produced from Grenache Noir. These rich and smooth wines are often compared to Banyuls, another Grenache-based fortified wine, but Maury wines are typically more robust and tannic, though they can come in a variety of styles, including light and purple young versions to incredibly aromatic and refined aged styles. A separate label can also include Maury Rancio—wines that have matured in sun-exposed oak barrels. Maury wines are an excellent match to chocolate desserts, as well as fresh fruit, tarts, creamy desserts and cakes, foie gras, and blue cheese. They can also pair well with spicy or sweet and sour dishes. Maury wines should always be served slightly chilled.

09

Duras

n/a ·

Duras is a red wine grape variety native to the Tarn Valley in the southwest of France, particularly associated with the Gaillac wine region. It is known for producing robust and spicy wines with good structure and aging potential. Duras is one of the traditional grape varieties of the Gaillac appellation and has been cultivated in the region for centuries. Wines made from Duras grapes typically exhibit deep, dark colors and a medium to full body. The flavor profile often includes dark fruit notes such as blackberries, black cherries, and plums, complemented by distinctive spicy and peppery aromas. Additionally, Duras wines may have earthy undertones and hints of tobacco or leather, particularly as they age. Duras is often blended with other local grape varieties, such as Braucol (also known as Fer Servadou) and Syrah, to create well-balanced wines with added complexity and depth. The blending helps to soften the tannins of Duras and enhance the overall aromatic profile of the wine. The grape's natural acidity and tannic structure make Duras wines suitable for aging, allowing them to develop more complex flavors over time. However, they can also be enjoyed young, where their bold fruit and spice characteristics are most prominent. In terms of food pairing, Duras wines are versatile and can complement a wide range of dishes. They pair particularly well with hearty and flavorful foods, such as grilled or roasted meats, stews, game, and dishes with rich sauces. The spiciness of Duras wines also makes them a good match for Mediterranean cuisine and foods with aromatic herbs and spices.

10

Faugères Rouge

n/a ·

Although it also produces white and rosé wines, Faugères is a French appellation located in Languedoc-Roussillon that is mostly known for their ripe and fruity red wines based on Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, with the occasional addition of Cinsaut and Lladoner Pelut. These ruby red wines typically display primary aromas of ripe red and black fruits that are usually complemented by nuances of coffee, underbrush, or pepper. With age, the wines may develop more robust expressions of leather or tobacco. Because of their well-structured tannins, red Faugères wines are an excellent match to red meat, game, or stews.

Domaine de la Grange des Pères

4.9 ·
Domaine de la Grange des Pères is one of the most influential and highly regarded estates in Languedoc, located in Aniane on parcels that Laurent Vaillé carefully selected for their stony, limestone-rich soils and naturally cooler conditions. Founded in the early 1990s, the estate has followed a philosophy of low yields, hand harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar, placing full emphasis on terroir expression. The vineyards cover roughly 11 hectares and are planted with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Counoise for the red wine, while the white cuvée is built around Roussanne, Marsanne and Gros Manseng. The limestone-heavy soils enable slow, even ripening and pronounced minerality, while the site’s elevation and contours contribute to freshness and aromatic precision. Due to limited production and its cult reputation, the wines are allocated strictly and rarely reach the broader market. The estate has thus become a symbol of independent, highly ambitious winemaking that has elevated the standing of the entire region. Domaine de la Grange des Pères remains a rare combination of authenticity, vision and longevity - wines that make a lasting impression and continue to evolve gracefully over many years.

About this ranking

TasteAtlas food rankings are based on the ratings of the TasteAtlas audience, with a series of mechanisms that recognize real users and that ignore bot, nationalist or local patriotic ratings, and give additional value to the ratings of users that the system recognizes as knowledgeable. For the “Top 81 Occitan Wines” list until June 02, 2026, 99 ratings were recorded, of which 79 were recognized by the system as legitimate. TasteAtlas Rankings should not be seen as the final global conclusion about food. Their purpose is to promote excellent local foods, instill pride in traditional dishes, and arouse curiosity about dishes you haven’t tried.

The initial list of top producers was compiled based on available reviews, awards, local recommendations, media and blog coverage, and consumer reviews. The list will be updated with ratings from TasteAtlas local ambassadors and TasteAtlas users.
